Designing for BUMP Roadworks

BUMP Roadworks designs were due this past week, and I crunched! Typical to my process, I overthought everything and kept getting stuck on research, scientific logic, and colour schemes.

My design concept for the series was wildlife native to Calgary and its surrounding areas. I kept things simple enough to execute, yet complex enough that I’d be happy with them in my portfolio. Cheers to my partner and artist friends for listening to my ramblings and helping me make design decisions <3 Special shoutout to Ris Wong for helping me pick a maroon all the way from Vancouver by popping into a Benjamin Moore store and analyzing colour chips with me on the phone.

Here’s a sneak peek at my design files! Painting was supposed to start tomorrow, but the weather forecast looks iffy (still in our freeze-thaw cycle, and it keeps snowing on and off), so our window has been pushed back a week.

I’m trying to plan all my paint days in Calgary to the T to make sure I’m being as efficient as possible. For my Honda Civic, a Canmore-Calgary round trip is roughly $40 lately. Multiply that by 10 priming+painting days, and there goes a good chunk of my pay, so I’m aiming for 8 days max. Paint, discounted through Benjamin Moore, comes out of our own pocket as well, and that’s reflected in my limited colour palette. Lots to think about!

Bison, mink, ruddy duck (with elongated neck), prickly rose. Relationships: Bison and prickly rose share habitats, mink will eat ruddy duck eggs

Pileated woodpecker, little brown bat, plains garter snake, mustard white butterfly, saskatoon berries and flowers. Relationships: Pileated woodpeckers create large tree cavities that little brown bats might nest in later

Swift fox, Richardson’s ground squirrel, westslope cutthroat trout, harlequin duck, blue grama. Relationships: Shared habitats, predator-prey
